Model History and Information: Caterpillar introduced the 994 wheel loader in 1990. The 994K generation is powered by a Cat 3516E engine and uses a Cat Planetary Powershift transmission that Caterpillar says was designed specifically for mining applications, along with Positive Flow Control hydraulics. Caterpillar says the standard 994K is sized to load a 150-ton 785 mining truck in four passes, and that with standard lift it loads a 195-ton 789 in five passes and a 240-ton 793 in six passes.
