Model History and Information: Built by John Brown & Company at Clydebank and launched on 27 September 1938, this Cunard liner was the largest passenger ship afloat for over five decades. Wartime conditions delayed her commercial debut: she entered service in March 1940 as a troopship, ultimately carrying more than 750,000 Allied personnel over roughly 430,000 nautical miles before her first civilian crossing in October 1946. For the next two decades she and her sister ship operated Cunard's weekly express service between Southampton, Cherbourg and New York, measuring 1,031 feet in length and displacing 83,673 gross register tons. She made her final Atlantic crossing on 8 December 1968, and after later ventures as a tourist attraction and floating university, she caught fire and capsized in Hong Kong harbour in January 1972.
