Model History and Information: Caterpillar introduced the Twenty-Five crawler tractor in late 1931, during the company's transition from the dark gray paint used since 1925 to the Hi-Way Yellow that later became its signature color; Caterpillar also offered a silver-gray finish at no extra cost for customers not ready for the change. The Twenty-Five followed the Model Twenty, the first machine Caterpillar designed and built entirely on its own rather than inheriting the design from predecessor companies Holt or Best; the Twenty had begun production in San Leandro, California, in 1927 before moving to East Peoria, Illinois, the following year. As one of Caterpillar's early crawler tractors from that formative period, the Twenty-Five remains a favorite among collectors of vintage construction equipment.
