Model History and Information: Q Branch's Lotus Esprit from 'The Spy Who Loved Me' transforms from a road car into a fully operational submarine in seconds, armed with surface-to-air missiles, before later returning to land amid a crowd of astonished beachgoers. The submersible version was built by Florida-based marine engineers from a Lotus-supplied Esprit body shell fitted with four propeller units, ballast tanks and batteries sealed in a watertight compartment; during filming in the Bahamas it was piloted from inside by a former US Navy SEAL in scuba gear. Onscreen, the effect combined this full-size working submarine with miniature special-effects photography for the wider underwater shots.
