Model History and Information: The GMC CCKW was the U.S. Army’s standard 2½-ton, 6x6 cargo truck of the Second World War, with roughly 560,000 to 570,000 examples built — more than any other U.S. vehicle except the Jeep. A large minority were fitted with a front-mounted winch, which let crews use the truck for light vehicle recovery in addition to hauling cargo under its bowed canvas top. CCKWs formed the backbone of the Red Ball Express, the emergency truck convoy system that carried about 12,500 tons of supplies a day to Allied forces advancing from Normandy between August and November 1944, staffed largely by African-American soldiers.
