Model History and Information: The GMC DUKW was an amphibious 6x6 truck developed to move supplies directly from ship to shore. Its name follows GM nomenclature: D for its 1942 design series, U for utility, K for all-wheel drive and W for the tandem driven rear axles. Yellow Truck & Coach and Chevrolet built 21,147 examples between 1942 and 1945. The DUKW proved its value during the Allied invasions of Sicily and Italy, on the D-Day beaches of Normandy, and in the Pacific, where Marine Corps units used it to cross the coral reefs around islands such as Saipan and Guam.
