Model History and Information: The Matilda II was a heavily armored British infantry tank designed to accompany advancing infantry against fortified positions, protected by armor that early-war Axis anti-tank guns struggled to penetrate. Malta's defending armor was a small mixed force of light, cruiser and Matilda tanks that never numbered more than nineteen vehicles. In 1942, A Squadron, 6th Royal Tank Regiment, joined the island's existing Malta Tank Troop, and on 21 December 1942 the two amalgamated into the unit known as Malta Tanks. Its four Matilda IIs were named Faulknor, Gallant, Greyhound and Griffin. The force saw no combat, instead patrolling the island, supporting morale and towing damaged aircraft clear of runways.
