Model History and Information: The Valentine, built by Vickers-Armstrongs, was Britain’s most-produced tank of the Second World War, protected by armor 8 to 65 mm thick and armed with a 2-pounder gun in most early marks. The Mark II replaced the original petrol engine with an AEC A190 diesel and added an external fuel tank for desert operations. Valentines of the 8th Royal Tank Regiment took part in Operation Crusader, the British offensive launched on 18 November 1941 to relieve the siege of Tobruk and clear Axis forces from eastern Libya, marking the type’s combat debut in North Africa. The tank’s name is usually traced to its presentation to the War Office on St Valentine’s Day, 14 February 1940.
