Model History and Information: The M24 Chaffee grew out of combat experience in North Africa, where the 37 mm gun on the M3 and M5 Stuart light tanks could no longer defeat contemporary armor. Design work began in 1943, pairing the M5's running gear with a new 75 mm gun and torsion-bar suspension for improved mobility, along with lightweight sloped armor. Production started in 1944, and the type reached Europe in November of that year, arriving too late to see extensive combat before Germany's surrender in May 1945. It went on to serve through the Korean War and with several allied armies, largely replacing the Stuart in the reconnaissance role.
