Model History and Information: Standardized in March 1945 as the M26 after evolving from the T20-T26 series of prototype medium tanks, this vehicle mounted a 90 mm Gun M3 with 70 rounds, plus two .30-caliber and one .50-caliber Browning machine guns, giving American armor firepower closer to the German Panther and Tiger. Production began in November 1944 at the Fisher Tank Arsenal, and the first Pershings reached the European theater in January 1945, initially issued to the 3rd and 9th Armored Divisions. The 3rd Armored Division first used the M26 in combat on 25 February 1945 near the Roer River, and a platoon later helped the 9th Armored Division secure the Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen in early March. By April 1945, M26 tanks were also serving with the 2nd Armored Division during its advance into central Germany, including the capture of Magdeburg.
