Model History and Information: Development began in July 1941, when the U.S. Army Ordnance Department sought a fast 6x6 wheeled tank destroyer to replace the M6 gun motor carriage. Competing prototypes came from Studebaker, Ford, and Chrysler; Ford's T22 was selected in April 1942 and standardized as the Light Armored Car M8. By then the 37 mm turret gun was inadequate against German tank frontal armor, so the type was redirected to armored reconnaissance. Ford built 8,634 units by mid-1945. Entering combat in 1943, it served in Italy, Northwest Europe, and the Pacific. British forces nicknamed it the Greyhound. Crews valued its road speed but noted thin armor, especially a hull floor vulnerable to mines.
