Model History and Information: The Sturmpanzer IV, nicknamed Brummbar, was a German assault gun built on the Panzer IV chassis and armed with a short-barreled 15 cm StuH 43 L/12 howitzer mounted in a fixed casemate superstructure rather than a rotating turret. About 306 were produced between 1943 and 1945 for close-support and urban combat. Sturmpanzer-Abteilung 217 formed on 20 April 1944 at Grafenwohr and received its first 19 vehicles by late May. The battalion moved to the Normandy front in early July, detraining well behind the lines because Allied bombing had crippled the French rail network. It first engaged near Caen on 7 August 1944, and by 19 August fielded 17 operational vehicles. Most of the unit escaped the Falaise Pocket and withdrew northeast.
