Model History and Information: After being fully re-equipped with Spitfires in early 1944, No. 451 Squadron of the Royal Australian Air Force moved to Corsica, arriving on 18 April 1944 and flying its first operation from the island on 23 April. Under overall Royal Air Force command within No. 251 Wing, the Australian unit escorted bombers and flew armed reconnaissance patrols supporting Allied operations in Italy and the invasion of southern France. The squadron carried the code letters BQ during this period and engaged German fighters on several occasions, remaining on Corsica until moving to Italy around September 1944. The Mk IX offered markedly improved high-altitude performance over earlier marks thanks to its two-stage supercharged Merlin. The named serial, unit, date and finish on this model identify the individual historical subject represented: Spitfire Mk IXc MA466/BQ-S, No. 451 (RAAF) Sqn., Corsica, July 1944 (1:48 Scale).
