Model History and Information: Western Star unveiled the 4700 in March 2011 at the Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, aimed at vocational and municipal customers who wanted a midrange-size powertrain, and expected it to cost somewhat less than a comparable 4900. SF in the title stands for set-forward axle, one of the two steer axle positions offered alongside the set-back layout, both sharing a 110-inch bumper-to-back-of-cab dimension. Western Star literature for the 4700 highlights a sloped hood for visibility and a wheel cut of up to 55 degrees for maneuvering on tight job sites. The cab is built from galvannealed steel.
