Model History and Information: The Cat 140 is a mid-size motor grader used for road construction, grading, and maintenance. Caterpillar's newest 140 generation offers a choice between two control layouts: JOY, with three-axis joysticks that place transmission, gear shifting, and machine direction in the left-hand control and drawbar, circle, and moldboard functions in the right, and LVR, a traditional lever-and-steering-wheel setup. The 140 JOY, identified by its joystick control, made its global debut at the Bauma trade show, ahead of the lever-controlled 140 LVR. Both versions combine a long moldboard, articulated frame, and a new nine-speed transmission for productive, accurate grading, and the 140 LVR was the first lever-controlled Cat grader offered with mastless 3D grade control.
