Model History and Information: After Vietnam the United States Army wanted one all-terrain vehicle to replace the jeep, the Gama Goat and everything in between, and to carry the TOW missile as well. AM General, Chrysler Defense and Teledyne Continental each submitted prototypes, and in late 1982 the Army chose the AM General design as the M998 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle. Production began in Indiana in April 1984 and the first vehicles entered service in October 1985; the initial order alone ran to 55,000. The type first saw action in Panama in 1989.
