Model History and Information: Strike Fighter Squadron 106, the Gladiators, is the US Navy's East Coast Fleet Replacement Squadron, based at NAS Oceana, Virginia. Established in 1984, it trains aircrew and maintainers on the Hornet and Super Hornet before they join fleet units. This aircraft wears a retro commemorative scheme honouring the Valions of VFA-15, a Hornet strike-fighter squadron disestablished in 2017. Heritage or demonstration paint schemes are periodically applied to training airframes. BuNo 164718 is a legacy F/A-18C operated in the fleet-training role, a mission for which VFA-106 has supplied replacement pilots and aircraft since the Hornet's introduction to Navy service.
