Model History and Information: Putting an 85 mm gun into the T-34 gave Soviet crews a weapon that could fight the Panther and the Tiger at ranges where the earlier 76 mm was helpless, at the cost of a bigger turret and a third crewman in it, which freed the commander from serving the gun. The first vehicles used the D-5T gun; from the spring of 1944 the simpler ZiS-S-53, easier to mass produce, took over. Output reached about 1,200 tanks a month by May 1944, and roughly sixteen and a half thousand had been built by the end of the war in Europe.
