Model History and Information: The Finnish Air Force operated the export Brewster Model 239, receiving 44 examples serialled BW-351 to BW-394. Flown chiefly by Fighter Squadron 24 (Lentolaivue 24), many of whose pilots were Winter War veterans, the type proved remarkably successful against Soviet aircraft during the Continuation War. Pilots favoured the four-plane swarm tactic, using a lower pair as bait and a higher pair to dive on interceptors. The squadron claimed a very large number of Soviet aircraft for the loss of only fifteen Brewsters in combat, and used the type until it was passed to Squadron 26 in May 1944. Finnish crews knew it simply as the Brewster, nicknaming it the pearl of the northern skies.
