Model History and Information: In the summer of 1942 the Mediterranean island of Malta was under near-constant Axis air attack, and Spitfires flown from its cratered airfields were central to its defence. Among the pilots of No. 249 Squadron was the Canadian George 'Screwball' Beurling, a gifted marksman who became the top-scoring fighter pilot of the siege and went on to be the most successful Canadian ace of the war, remembered as the 'Falcon of Malta'. His Spitfire Mk.Vb wore a Vokes tropical filter under the nose for desert-style conditions. This model represents EP706, one of the aircraft associated with Beurling during the fighting over Malta.
