Model History and Information: This Evolution Series set pairs the Cat 225 with the modern Cat 323 to show how Caterpillar's hydraulic excavators advanced across five decades. Caterpillar introduced a prototype excavator in 1970 and, by 1972, launched the 225 as its first customer-ready hydraulic excavator, a machine that helped establish Caterpillar in the excavator market. The 323 represents Caterpillar's current 20-ton-class excavator, built around a Cat C7.1 ACERT engine and, according to Caterpillar, uses 20 to 25 percent less fuel than the corresponding models it replaced. The set includes an 84-page collector booklet tracing that evolution.
