Model History and Information: Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 542, the Tigers, operates from Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, within Marine Aircraft Group 14 and the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. A veteran squadron of the Second World War, Korea and Vietnam, it long flew the AV-8 Harrier before retiring its last Harriers on 1 December 2022. The Tigers received their first F-35B on 31 May 2023 and, after achieving Safe-for-Flight certification that August, became the Marine Corps' first East Coast F-35B fleet squadron. The type is the STOVL member of the fifth-generation Lightning II family, combining stealth, sensor fusion and short-takeoff, vertical-landing performance. Full operating capability with the aircraft followed in 2024.
