Model History and Information: This F-4E holds a notable place in Phantom production: McDonnell Douglas built it as the 5,000th F-4 Phantom II. It was formally handed over to the United States Air Force in a ceremony at the company's plant in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1978, almost twenty years after the first Phantom prototype had flown. The milestone marked one of the longest and largest fighter production runs of the jet age. The airframe was later transferred to the Turkish Air Force, which retained the American serial, and it subsequently underwent modernization to an upgraded standard. As an F-4E it carried the internal cannon and slatted wing of the definitive Air Force variant.
