Model History and Information: Germany was a major Phantom operator, fielding the F-4F, a lightened air-defense variant, from the 1970s. West Germany placed 153 F-4Fs in front-line service, and from the 1980s the fleet was modernized under the Improved Combat Efficiency program, known in German as Kampfwertsteigerung, gaining new radar and beyond-visual-range AIM-120 missiles. The last German Phantoms served with Jagdgeschwader 71 Richthofen at Wittmundhafen, flying their final sortie on 29 June 2013. In 2008 a specially painted aircraft marked fifty years since the Phantom's first flight in 1958. This commemorative scheme celebrates that anniversary and the type's long career in Luftwaffe service.
