Model History and Information: Although painted in US markings, this is a German-owned F-4F, the simplified air-superiority version of the Phantom that West Germany ordered under the Peace Rhine program in 1971. Lighter than the F-4E and initially without Sparrow capability, it was later upgraded with improved radar and avionics under the Improved Combat Efficiency program. From the mid-1990s the US Air Force's 20th Fighter Squadron, the Silver Lobos, operated German Phantoms at Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico, under the 49th Fighter Wing, training Luftwaffe aircrew far from congested European airspace. The squadron flew these Phantoms into the early 2000s. Specifics of this individual airframe beyond the training program are not independently documented here.
