Model History and Information: The Northrop F-5A was a compact, low-cost supersonic light fighter developed from the T-38 trainer and powered by two General Electric J85 turbojets, armed with two 20mm cannon and able to carry Sidewinders and external ordnance. Taiwan's Republic of China Air Force was among the first recipients, taking delivery of its initial batch of F-5As and F-5Bs under the US Military Assistance Program in 1965. The fleet grew steadily, and by the early 1970s the ROCAF operated dozens of Freedom Fighters as a mainstay day fighter. The type equipped front-line interceptor units defending Taiwan and the offshore islands during a period of heightened cross-strait tension.
