Model History and Information: The Naval Strike Wing was the Fleet Air Arm's Harrier force, formed in March 2007 from the combined 800 and 801 Naval Air Squadrons operating as a single unit. Flying the second-generation Harrier GR7 and GR9 from RAF Cottesmore, it served as the Royal Navy component of Joint Force Harrier, the joint command that pooled Royal Air Force and naval Harriers for land and carrier operations. The wing embarked aboard Invincible-class carriers such as HMS Illustrious and HMS Ark Royal, and its personnel deployed to Afghanistan in the close air support role. By 2009 the force was at full strength, but the Harrier fleet was withdrawn under the 2010 defence review, and the wing disbanded that April.
