Model History and Information: The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk was a rugged, Allison-powered American fighter-bomber used across every major Allied front, and its later production versions served widely in the Pacific in the fighter and ground-attack role. The 45th Fighter Squadron formed at Wheeler Field, Hawaii, in December 1940 as part of the 15th Fighter Group and lost aircraft during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Through 1943 the squadron flew P-40s in the defense of Hawaii and then deployed forward into the Central Pacific, operating from Baker Island and from forward strips in the Gilbert Islands against Japanese forces late that year. The unit later re-equipped with P-47s and P-51s for very-long-range escort missions flown from Iwo Jima in 1945.
