Model History and Information: The 49th Fighter Group was one of the first American fighter units in the South West Pacific, defending northern Australia and New Guinea from 1942. In its early campaigns it flew the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, a rugged fighter that held the line against Japanese air power before more modern types arrived. Among the group's celebrated pilots was Gerald R. Johnson, who rose to command within the 49th and became one of the Fifth Air Force's leading aces. The Warhawk gave the group's pilots their first hard-won combat experience over the Pacific. This model wears P-40N markings representing the 49th Fighter Group's Warhawk service.
