Model History and Information: The 312th Bombardment Group flew the Douglas A-20 Havoc for the US Fifth Air Force in the Southwest Pacific, operating from forward strips in New Guinea such as Gusap. Its crews specialised in low-level attack, sweeping in at treetop height to strafe and bomb Japanese airfields, positions and shipping as the Allied advance pushed north toward the Philippines. The A-20G was the definitive strafer version, its solid nose packed with forward-firing guns instead of a bombardier's glazing. This aircraft, 42-86786, was named The Hell'N Pelican II and served with the group's 388th Bombardment Squadron in that campaign.
