Model History and Information: The Challengers began as an attack unit, VA-43, before being redesignated Fighter Squadron 43 on 1 June 1973 and taking up the adversary mission at NAS Oceana, Virginia. In that role the squadron flew Skyhawks against Atlantic Fleet fighter crews, simulating hostile aircraft in dissimilar air combat training, and its jets wore camouflage schemes modelled on potential opponents rather than standard Navy markings. Bureau Number 151118, an A-4E, served with the Naval Air Test Center and then Marine squadron VMA-322 before joining the Challengers in 1975 as side number AD-320. It returned to the squadron at the end of the decade and remained on adversary duties into the 1980s.
