Model History and Information: A 2.5-ton 6x6 medium truck, this General Motors design entered U.S. Army service in 1941 and was built in enormous numbers, over half a million, through 1945. Nicknamed the "Jimmy" and the original "Deuce and a Half," it moved troops, supplies and equipment across every wartime theatre and formed the backbone of the Red Ball Express that kept Allied forces supplied after Normandy. The long-wheelbase 353 chassis accepted many specialized bodies; among them were enclosed van and shelter bodies used by the U.S. Signal Corps to house radio, message-center and repair equipment for mobile field communications. A GMC 270 straight-six engine and six-wheel drive gave dependable off-road performance in mud, sand and snow.
