Model History and Information: The two-seat F-105F was adapted into the Wild Weasel, sent ahead of strike packages to bait North Vietnamese radar-guided missile batteries into revealing themselves. Aircraft 63-8301 flew with the 357th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 355th Tactical Fighter Wing from Takhli in Thailand. On 19 April 1967 it carried Major Leo Thorsness and his electronic warfare officer, Captain Harold Johnson, leading Kingfish flight against defences near Hanoi. Thorsness knocked out a missile site, shot down a MiG-17 and then stayed over his downed wingman to cover the rescue attempt until his fuel ran critical. He received the Medal of Honor for that mission.
