Model History and Information: Australia ordered twenty-four F-111Cs in 1963, though technical problems held up delivery until the first six reached RAAF Base Amberley on 1 July 1973. Built with longer wings and a strengthened undercarriage for Australian requirements, the aircraft served as the nation's long-range strike platform for the next thirty-seven years and was known throughout the force as the Pig. Successive upgrades kept it credible, adding the Pave Tack targeting pod, the AGM-84 Harpoon and the AGM-142 Popeye stand-off missile. A8-131 carried markings celebrating thirty years of F-111 operations in 2003. The fleet was retired in December 2010.
