Model History and Information: The Royal Netherlands Air Force retired its F-16 Fighting Falcon on 27 September 2024, ending 45 years of service ahead of full transition to the F-35. To mark the occasion, a farewell formation of F-16s flew a route across the country, passing former and current air force sites including Leeuwarden and Volkel. The aircraft wearing tail J-197 flew in that commemorative formation carrying a special 'Farewell Falcon' livery, its markings recalling the type's operational deployments and the squadrons that flew it in Dutch service. Dutch F-16s had taken part in numerous NATO and coalition operations across four decades, and surplus airframes were passed to other operators as the fleet wound down.
