Model History and Information: This model depicts a hypothetical what-if scheme: it applies Japan Air Self-Defense Force markings to the carrier-based F-35C. In reality Japan does not operate the F-35C. Japan has selected the conventional F-35A and the short-takeoff, vertical-landing F-35B, the latter intended to fly from its converted Izumo-class ships; the first Japanese F-35Bs arrived at Nyutabaru Air Base in August 2025. The depicted ASM-3 is a genuine Japanese supersonic anti-ship missile developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, but it has been associated with the F-2, not the F-35. The scheme is therefore a conceptual, speculative livery rather than a representation of any operational aircraft.
