Model History and Information: The 57th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, the Black Knights, defended the airspace over Iceland from Keflavik as part of NATO's northern guard. The squadron received its first F-4C Phantom IIs in April 1973, replacing the F-102 Delta Dagger, and flew the C-model until converting to the F-4E in 1978. Its task was round-the-clock interception of aircraft approaching the Iceland gap. Crews trained intensively for William Tell, the US Air Force's air-to-air weapons meet that measured air-defense units against one another. A Phantom in a William Tell competition scheme reflects this period of interceptor operations from Iceland in the later 1970s.
