Model History and Information: The Minnesota Air National Guard's 148th Group has flown from Duluth since 1960, when it took on Air Defense Command alert duty. In 1976 it gave up interceptors for the reconnaissance mission, becoming the 148th Tactical Reconnaissance Group with the RF-4C Phantom II. That period ended in October 1983, when the unit returned to air defence as the 148th Fighter Interceptor Group and re-equipped with the F-4D Phantom II, a type by then well seasoned in Air Force service. Flying from Duluth International Airport, its crews stood alert over the northern approaches to the United States until the F-16A replaced the Phantom in March 1990.
