Model History and Information: On 24 September 1958, during the Second Taiwan Strait Crisis, Republic of China Air Force F-86F Sabres fired the newly delivered AIM-9B Sidewinder in combat for the first time in history. The Soviet-built MiG-17 could outclimb and outrun the Sabre and often stayed beyond gun range; the heat-seeking missile changed that. In a single large clash over the strait that day, ROCAF Sabres downed several MiGs, the first aerial victories ever scored with a guided missile. Marked 359 in Nationalist service, this aircraft represents the F-86Fs of that campaign, hastily modified under a U.S. program to carry the new weapon that would reshape air combat worldwide.
