Model History and Information: This Sabre wears the livery applied by the EAA Aviation Museum in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, to honor Eugene "Gene" Kranz, later NASA's Apollo-era flight director. Before his space career, Kranz served as a U.S. Air Force fighter pilot and flew the F-86 on patrol duty over Korea in the mid-1950s. The museum restored its aircraft in the markings of the jet he flew, which he named for his wife, Marta. In 2016 Kranz donated the flight helmet from his Sabre days to the museum, where it is displayed alongside the aircraft. The scheme commemorates early Cold War air defense and one pilot's path from the fighter cockpit to mission control.
