Model History and Information: The US Navy flight demonstration squadron known as the Blue Angels was formed in 1946 and gave its first public demonstrations that summer flying the Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat. On 25 August 1946 the team converted to the lighter, faster and more powerful F8F-1 Bearcat, at which point it introduced the famous diamond formation. By the end of the year the team consisted of four Bearcats numbered one to four on their tail sections. The Bearcat was Grumman's compact, high-performance piston fighter, and the type remained in Blue Angels service until 1949. The cannon-armed F8F-1B was a production sub-variant of the first Bearcat model.
