Model History and Information: No. 1(F) Squadron, among the most senior units of the Royal Air Force, became the first RAF squadron to field the second-generation Harrier II. Re-equipping from the first-generation Harrier at RAF Wittering, long celebrated as the home of the Harrier, it was declared fully operational on the Harrier GR5 in November 1989. The GR5 brought a larger composite wing, greater payload and range, and improved avionics over the earlier GR3, while retaining the vectored-thrust short and vertical take-off capability central to the family. The squadron later moved up to GR7 and GR9 standards and relocated to RAF Cottesmore in 2000, remaining a mainstay of British Harrier operations until the fleet's retirement in 2010.
