Model History and Information: The Shenyang J-5 is the Chinese licence-built version of the Soviet MiG-17F day fighter, and the first jet fighter mass-produced in China. Its initial flight took place on 19 July 1956 at the Shenyang factory. A swept-wing, single-seat interceptor, it carried a mixed cannon battery of two 23 mm and one 37 mm guns, and could mount underwing stores such as the UB-16-57 pod firing 57 mm rockets. The type equipped People's Liberation Army Air Force units through the late 1950s and 1960s before being superseded by more modern fighters. Several hundred were produced, and the design was also supplied to allied air forces.
