Model History and Information: After the 1940 fall of France exposed the need for mobile anti-tank firepower, U.S. Army Ordnance began work in June 1941 on the T12, mating a 75 mm M1897A4 field gun, a modernized French 75, to the chassis of a lightly armored half-track. It was standardized in October 1941 as a self-propelled tank destroyer. Fifty early vehicles reached the Philippines, where they first saw action against Japanese forces in 1941-42, and the type later equipped tank destroyer battalions in North Africa, including the Tunisian fighting of 1942-43. About 2,202 were produced, though many were converted back to standard half-tracks. Marine units employed survivors in the Pacific before the design was declared obsolete in 1944.
