Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.N DAK s.Pz.Abt.501 Tunisia 1942/43 (with "Tiger" Insignia)
Product Dimensions: 3.04 x 1.59 x 1.37 in.
Model History and Information: The Ausf. N was the final production version of the Panzer III and the only one armed with the short 7.5 cm KwK 37, a gun that fired a far more effective high-explosive round than the long 5 cm gun it replaced on infantry-support duty. Hitler ordered the change in July 1942 to give the new heavy tank battalions a close-support vehicle to escort the slower, mechanically fragile Tiger; by early 1943 Tiger companies in Tunisia and Russia were operating Panzer IIIs, Panzer IVs and Tigers side by side. About 700 were newly built or converted from earlier Panzer III hulls in 1942 and 1943. Schwere Panzer-Abteilung 501, the first heavy tank battalion sent overseas, landed in Tunisia in November 1942 and fought there until the German surrender in May 1943.
