Model History and Information: The Ausf. J, in production from February 1944 until the last days of the war, was the final and most numerous Panzer IV variant, with roughly 3,160 built. Simplification for faster output was its defining trait: the electric generator that powered the turret traverse was deleted, so the gunner had to rotate the turret by hand. This mid-production example still carries the steel Schürzen side skirts inherited from the Ausf. H, added to stop Soviet anti-tank rifles from penetrating the thin side armour; the lighter wire mesh version of the Schürzen only appeared on the last production batches, in late 1944. Return rollers were reduced from four to three, and by late 1944 the Zimmerit anti-mine coating was dropped from the production line.
