Model History and Information: Operation Deep Freeze was the name given to the United States' programme of Antarctic operations that began in the mid-1950s in support of the International Geophysical Year, and it came to cover the regular military missions that resupplied American bases on the frozen continent. For years these operations were led by the US Navy, whose aircraft flew people and cargo across vast distances of ocean and ice. The Douglas R5D was the Navy's version of the four-engined C-54 Skymaster transport, a reliable long-range aircraft well suited to such journeys. This model, 56528, wears the high-visibility markings used to make aircraft stand out against the Antarctic snow.
