Model History and Information: Meeting the T-34 and the KV in 1941 convinced the German army that it needed a gun capable of killing Soviet armour at long range, and quickly. The answer was expedient: the long 8.8 cm Pak 43 mounted high in an open-topped fighting compartment on the Geschutzwagen III/IV chassis. Alkett showed a mild steel prototype to Hitler in October 1942 and production began early the following year. First called Hornisse, the hornet, it was renamed Nashorn, rhinoceros, in 1944. About 494 were built and they equipped six heavy anti-tank battalions of forty-five vehicles each.
