Model History and Information: By 1943 the Stuka was too slow and vulnerable to survive as a dive bomber, so it was given a new job. The Ju 87G carried a 37 mm Bordkanone under each wing, firing tungsten-cored armour piercing rounds that could defeat the side and rear armour of Soviet tanks, though only from very close range and at the right angle. The first conversion flew on 31 January 1943 and production aircraft reached the front that April. Crews called it the Kanonenvogel, the gun bird; Hans-Ulrich Rudel claimed twelve Soviet tanks in a single day at Kursk with one.
