Model History and Information: On 13 September 1987 a fully armed single-seat Flanker intercepted a Royal Norwegian Air Force Lockheed P-3B Orion shadowing Soviet naval movements off the Kola Peninsula. During repeated close passes over the Barents Sea, the fighter's tail clipped one of the patrol aircraft's propellers; a shed blade fragment punctured the Orion's fuselage and caused cabin decompression, while the interceptor lost part of a vertical-stabilizer tip. Both aircraft recovered safely to base. The encounter became one of the best-documented air-to-air contacts of the late Cold War and demonstrated the reach of the then-new Sukhoi interceptor operating from Soviet Arctic air-defence bases. The pilot was reported as Senior Lieutenant Vasily Tsymbal.
